NBA Commissioner Adam Silver Not Rushing Kawhi Leonard Situation

NEW YORK — The NBA will not rush to judgment in its investigation into whether a business relationship between Kawhi Leonard and a California company was legitimate or merely a way for the Los Angeles Clippers to circumvent salary cap rules, Commissioner Adam Silver said Wednesday.

Speaking after a board of governors meeting in New York—one that Clippers owner Steve Ballmer attended—Silver said the league will wait to see the report from the outside firm it has hired to conduct its investigation before taking any next steps.

"We're constantly learning in the league office, and again, I'm reserving judgment because I don't know the facts here," Silver said. "I don't know what Kawhi was paid. I don't know what he did or didn't do. We'll leave all that for the investigation."

The NBA opened its investigation last week into whether a $28 million endorsement contract between Leonard and sustainability services company Aspiration Fund Adviser, LLC—which filed for bankruptcy earlier this year—broke league rules, following a report by journalist Pablo Torre. The Clippers have strongly denied that any rules were broken and welcomed the league's investigation.

"I think as a matter of fundamental fairness, I would be reluctant to act if there was a mere appearance of impropriety," Silver said. "I think the goal of a full investigation is to find if there really was impropriety. ... I would want anybody else in the situation that Mr. Ballmer is in now, or Kawhi Leonard for that matter, to be treated the same way I would want to be treated if people were making allegations against me."

Ballmer made a $50 million investment in Aspiration, and the company and the team announced a $300 million partnership in September 2021. That was about a month after Leonard signed a four-year, $176 million extension with the Clippers. The team ended its relationship with Aspiration after two years, saying the contract was in default. Aspiration's co-founder, Joseph Sanberg, pleaded guilty last month to federal charges of wire fraud, with prosecutors stating he defrauded investors and lenders out of $248 million and that "Aspiration's financial statements were inaccurate and reflected much higher revenue than the company in fact received."

"I'm a big believer in due process and fairness, and you need to now let the investigation run its course," Silver said, adding that he has "very broad powers" when determining penalties if wrongdoing is found.

Derek Carr Teases Possibility of NFL Comeback

Former NFL quarterback Derek Carr teased the possibility of making a comeback during an appearance on the Dan Patrick Show on Thursday. The 34-year-old, who debuted last week as a pre- and postgame analyst for YouTube's broadcast of the Kansas City Chiefs–Los Angeles Chargers game, admitted that he's still training and couldn't completely rule out a return to professional football.

"I wouldn't say never," Carr said. "Because I've learned that when I say never, it usually happens. I think we've all probably learned that. For me, I'm training because I love to train. That's going to be the rest of my life. I love to train."

Carr, who was a member of the New Orleans Saints' roster, decided to retire in May, shortly after the 2025 NFL Draft and just weeks before training camp, as he did not want to undergo shoulder surgery. The veteran quarterback chose to forfeit his $30 million fully guaranteed salary in exchange for the $10 million roster bonus he received in March when he was expected to play during the 2025 season.

"I throw a football every now and then with my kids and to my buddy for fun because it's part of my rehab for my shoulder," Carr said. "I'm still doing those things. I've always felt like, even though I'm done, if God wanted me to do it, I gotta be ready. I don't want to go out there and not be ready. I'll be ready, but I'm not coming back. Right now, today, I'm not coming back."

Carr spent his first nine seasons with the Oakland/Las Vegas Raiders. He holds franchise records in passing yards (35,222), passing touchdowns (217), and completions (3,201), while ranking second behind Pro Football Hall of Famer Ken Stabler (69-26-1) in QB wins with a 63-79-0 overall record.

Jason Collins Undergoing Treatment for Brain Tumor

NEW YORK — Jason Collins, the NBA's first openly gay player who now serves as an ambassador for the league, is undergoing treatment for a brain tumor, his family announced on Thursday.

Collins came out as gay in 2013, becoming the first publicly gay athlete to play in any of the four major North American sports leagues. He retired in 2014 after a 13-year career that included stints with the New Jersey Nets, Memphis, Minnesota, Atlanta, Boston, Washington, and a return to the Nets after they moved to Brooklyn.

His family sent a statement to the NBA on Thursday: "Jason and his family welcome your support and prayers and kindly ask for privacy as they dedicate their attention to Jason's health and well-being," the statement said.

Collins averaged 3.6 points and 3.7 rebounds in his career. In his best season, he averaged 6.4 points and 6.1 rebounds for the then-New Jersey Nets in 2004-05.
